Shannon Scates

Shannon Scates

Shannon Scates was born in Washington, D.C., in 1986, and raised in Prince George’s (P.G.) County, Maryland. She has always found the ability to create something new very magical. Shannon’s family culture provided the foundation for the artist she has become. There was pride in their community, pride in their history, and endless stories of the realities of their Black experience. Growing up in P.G. Maryland also allowed her to see Black people prospering as the norm, not an exception. This exposure provided Shannon with a pride in her people and culture that could not be shaken.

Shannon started painting in 2007, while attending school as a marketing major at North Carolina A&T State University. While at A&T, she took a drawing class and her professor encouraged her to participate in an art show after seeing her paintings. He told her she had something special, and she has been painting ever since. She has a passion for continuously improving her skills in creating art by taking classes and she is constantly reading art-related books.

Shannon's art has been on the cover of Washington D.C.-based Hill Rag Magazine and she was most recently featured in a Shoutout LA article as an artist to know. She has exhibited in numerous group shows including Black Beyond Belonging at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with the Sepia Collective, Artomatic DC, Art All Night DC, and the AJOYO show in London, in 2020. She also had her first solo show in 2021, titled ‘Today Is a Great Day to Be You’, at Jubilee Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. Shannon’s work was also exhibited and auctioned at the 2022 Wearable Art Gala, hosted know Richard and Tina Lawson. She recently participated in The Other Art Fair, in Santa Monica, where she was chosen as Fair Director’s Pick.

Her art is vibrant, and her use of bright colors is meant to be a visual celebration intended to uplift the viewer. She “speaks life through art”.  Shannon also recognizes the importance of telling our stories. She likes to accompany each piece with its own narrative, as she believes our stories are what facilitate connection, understanding and most important, love.

She intends to use her creative abilities to heal and inspire. She also enjoys using her art to give back through donations to a number of fundraisers and art auctions. She recently led an art workshop at the Sanctuary of Hope in Los Angeles. This organization is dedicated to serving vulnerable youth and young adults who are foster care, homeless, or at-promise.

Shannon currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

Peyton E. “The Artist” Burnett

Peyton E. “The Artist” Burnett

Peyton E. “The Artist” Burnett was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1997. Although she grew up teaching herself how to draw and paint, Peyton also earned a B.S. in Studio Art with a concentration in painting, and a minor in Fashion Merchandising at Marist College in 2020 to enhance her knowledge of art. Peyton’s art and focuses of study have allowed her to travel throughout 26 countries along Southeast and East Asia, South and Central America, Europe, and Africa.

Her works have been exhibited in the US and abroad including a student-organized exhibition at the 2019 Venice Biennale, art fairs, and various creative pop-up shops throughout Southern California. She has also been commissioned to do live painting for different types of events (including corporate) such as the Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services 35th Anniversary at the famed Paramount Studios NY set in 2019. Her works have been recognized in a number of news and media outlets such as Voyage LA magazine, Black Design Collective,  and  Marist College’s “For the Record”,  curated by Marist Circle.

In her candid oil paintings, in which she incorporates 23k Venetian gold foil sourced from Venice, Italy, Peyton, The Artist reflects on what it means to grow and evolve as a human being as well as the courage, fortitude, and perseverance that ensue. Once a victim of bullying throughout her childhood and young adult years, Peyton saw her personal growth stifled and her creative voice silenced repeatedly. The period of introspection that followed produced works of raw sincerity; visual journals playing out the intensity of growing pains and the strengthening of her character, all to produce her mental strength and determination along the way.

Peyton's artistic vision reached maturity in 2019, when she completed a residency in Venice, Italy, during the Biennale, which was appropriately titled, "May You Live in Interesting Times". Inspired by the works of the Renaissance Masters, and paintings exhibited at the Biennale by other artists from around the world, she began a series titled, "The Story of Me", a collection of 10 self-portraits documenting her journey of self-evolution and healing. Today, her works reflect not only her perseverance and strength through those adverse times that she experienced while growing up, but the courage to continue sharing those raw stages of growth that we all experience as humans, every day.

Peyton's latest series of works titled, "Introspection", is a continuation of her earlier series, “The Story of Me.” This sequel expands upon that collection’s look into the mental, emotional, and spiritual processes of growth. Using the facial and figurative expressions of various subjects, Peyton chose to use people other than herself, displaying that introspection is a shared human experience. The varied expressions in each painting depict the sometimes uncomfortable, yet eye opening moments on one’s journey to wholeness. Her intention in creating this body of work is to usher the viewer into personal reflection. Through her own journey of painting, she has found that wholeness happens in multiples, and in multiple ways. Arrival is never just one destination. The different stages of growth that we experience will repeat itself time, and time again in different ways and through many challenges. The acceptance of this realization brings humility, causing one to finally surrender to the architect of their soul. This is true peace.
